# One week in Sardinia: a realistic itinerary

> Three editable seven-day examples start from Olbia, Alghero or Cagliari, with one or two bases and a car; the nights depend on your flight times, so fit the days to your arrival and departure.

Seven nights work best with one main base and, at most, a second contrasting base rather than a complete tour of the island.

## Three editable seven-day examples

Three editable examples help you arrange seven days. Arrive in Olbia for the north-east; choose Alghero for the north-west; start in Cagliari for the south.

All three assume a car, one or two bases at most and days without long drives. Seven days are not the same as seven nights: how many nights you book depends on your flight times, so shift the days to fit your arrival and departure.

Each table lists concrete places and the margin to allow; check live times and opening hours instead of trusting fixed driving minutes. For the north-east see also [Seven days from Olbia](<https://findsardinia.com/en/guides/seven-days-from-olbia-a-realistic-itinerary>) and, for the arrival choice, [First time in Sardinia: north or south](<https://findsardinia.com/en/guides/first-time-sardinia-north-or-south>).

## From Olbia: seven days in the north-east

Base: Olbia or San Teodoro. Keep the first and last day light because the airport and the coast are close, and add a second base only if the far north matters.

**Seven days from Olbia \(editable example with a car\)**

| Day | Base and main activity | Travel and margin |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Arrival: Olbia airport, then Olbia or San Teodoro | Short transfer; keep the rest of the day free |
| 2 | Olbia: historic centre and waterfront; Pittulongu by car or verified ASPO line 4 | No walkable downtown beach; check the city line times |
| 3 | San Teodoro: La Cinta and the lagoon; evening in the village | Short drive; arrive early for parking |
| 4 | Porto San Paolo and the harbour; optional Tavolara boat trip | Check wind and whether boats run; return to the harbour |
| 5 | Costa Smeralda: Porto Cervo and a north-east beach | Scenic coast road; leave the evening flexible |
| 6 | Spare or windy day: indoor or food option in the base area, or a short local outing | Stay in the base zone; no fixed booking needed |
| 7 | Departure: last stop near the base and Olbia airport | Keep a buffer and refuel before the airport |

## From Alghero: seven days in the north-west

Base: Alghero, with Stintino or Castelsardo only as a second base for the far north-west. The old town and the Lido are walkable, so the car stays parked on the first full day.

**Seven days from Alghero \(editable example with a car\)**

| Day | Base and main activity | Travel and margin |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Arrival: Alghero airport to the old town | Short transfer; keep the evening for the seafront |
| 2 | Alghero: ramparts, old town and Lido beach | Park once; walk all day |
| 3 | Capo Caccia and Porto Conte; Neptune’s Grotto area | One drive; check access and boat times |
| 4 | Bosa: coloured houses and the river mouth | A longer day out; start early and return before dark |
| 5 | Stintino and the La Pelosa area, or Castelsardo | The longest drive of the week; check access rules |
| 6 | Spare or windy day: inland wine village or a sheltered bay | Change the plan; no fixed booking |
| 7 | Departure: calm morning in Alghero, then the airport | Short transfer; keep a buffer |

## From Cagliari: seven days in the south

Base: Cagliari for days 1-2; if you add a second base, move to Villasimius for days 3-4 \(same south-east coast, with Costa Rei nearby\) and return to Cagliari for days 5-7. With a single Cagliari base, keep days 3-4 as day trips and allow extra margin instead of assuming short drives.

**Seven days from Cagliari \(editable example with a car\)**

| Day | Base and main activity | Travel and margin |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Arrival: Cagliari Elmas to the city centre | Rail or short transfer; evening in the Marina area |
| 2 | Cagliari: Castello, Bastione and Poetto | No car needed; check city bus times |
| 3 | Villasimius and Capo Carbonara, or a Cagliari-area day if you keep one base | Day trip from Cagliari or first day at the second base; allow margin in high season |
| 4 | Costa Rei from a Villasimius base; from Cagliari allow a longer day | Move within the south-east; avoid the busiest return hour |
| 5 | Return to Cagliari, then Pula and Nora archaeology from the city | Check out and drive back first; Nora is a city-side day, not a short hop from Villasimius |
| 6 | Spare or windy day: city museum and food streets, or a sheltered beach | Swap the plan; keep the car parked |
| 7 | Departure: last walk and Elmas airport | Keep a buffer; check the car return |

## The choice in brief

To prepare one week in Sardinia, choose the essential experiences first and place them on the map beside your arrival and departure points. Specifically, calculate road time with parking, baggage collection and check-in included. At this point, if a day contains more travel than time in the place itself, remove a stop or move the base closer. Then, a lighter plan leaves room for the sea, an unhurried meal and the discoveries that make the holiday memorable.

## When it works best

It suits travellers who want time for unplanned swims, long lunches and evenings that are not ruled by the next check-in.

## The limit to allow for

Changing accommodation every night consumes energy, multiplies small risks and makes weather changes harder to absorb.

## How to organise it

Choose three essential days, two flexible days and one deliberately slow day before reserving anything else.

In the calendar for one week in Sardinia, alternate demanding days with simple ones. Moreover, use a transfer only when it creates a genuine change of landscape or activity, then give every base at least two consecutive nights. In particular, keep half a day free near the accommodation to absorb a delay, a weather change or a place where you wish to stay longer.

## Real costs and timings

When estimating one week in Sardinia, compare two complete plans. In particular, add accommodation, fuel or tickets, parking, supplements and the costs created by changing property. If needed, include the value of the hours spent driving or waiting. First, a second base can justify its price when it removes several long returns, while a low room rate loses its advantage if the same road must be driven every day.

## Before you book

Before confirming one week in Sardinia, secure only what has limited availability: flights or ferries, accommodation at the main stops and experiences that genuinely matter. Moreover, choose flexible terms when sea or weather can change the plan. Then, check the final day before paying for the first night, since vehicle return and departure must remain compatible even after a minor delay.

## What to check

Check car-return times, check-in windows and the distance to your departure point on the final night.

During the week before one week in Sardinia, check the forecast, road times, access and booked activity schedules again. At this point, verify the final base’s distance from the port or airport as well. For safety, save addresses, confirmations and essential contacts on the phone. Specifically, if one step has changed, adjust that day without rebuilding the entire itinerary.
